Government of Canada supports Shaw Festival

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario — On behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today celebrated the Government of Canada’s investment of $2,605,458 to support the Shaw Festival as part of the Marquee Tourism Events Program (MTEP).

“This investment greatly benefits our region and the many businesses that provide services to event attendees,” said Minister Nicholson. “Through MTEP, the Shaw Festival can continue to showcase Niagara-on-the-Lake as a destination for families and a town dedicated to making visitors feel welcome.”

Government of Canada for their ongoing support of the Shaw Festival,” said Colleen Blake, Executive Director of the Shaw Festival, “MTEP proved to be extremely helpful in 2009, contributing to a major increase in sales for The Shaw. This timely injection of financial support in 2010 will certainly have a significant economic impact for The Shaw, our community partners and the entire Niagara Region.”
Founded in 1962, the Shaw Festival is a world class theatre festival located in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The mandate of the Shaw Festival is to produce and present the work of George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) and playwrights writing anywhere in the world during, or about, the era of Shaw’s lifetime.

This MTEP funding will allow the Shaw Festival to enhance already existing marketing initiatives and current media campaigns, as well as allowing it to focus on efforts to expand the Shaw’s market reach and broaden its audience demographic.
MTEP is a temporary two-year program under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.  The Program supports tourism events in all parts of the country with the goal of providing a much-needed boost to the Canadian tourism industry – an industry that faced several challenges at the beginning of the global recession.  Now in its final year, MTEP will provide up to $39 million in federal investments to festivals and events to stimulate the economy and help promote Canada as a global destination of choice.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan sets out to stimulate the Canadian economy through numerous programs that support local economies. The Government of Canada is committed to tourism, a $71.5-billion industry that included 650 000 jobs in 2009. It helps communities and regions thrive from coast to coast, hosting national and international travellers to all parts of the country.
